Melvich Gaelic Choir
Còisir Ghàidhlig Mhealbhaich was established in the early 1970s bringing together other choirs in the local area. Its membership is drawn from the north coast of Sutherland and Caithness, and at present there are around 40 members.
After many years winning the Sheriff MacMaster; Còisir Ghàidhlig Mhealbhaich moved up to compete in the Lorn Shield, which we last won in 2011 in Steòrnabhagh. In 2008 the choir pulled off the double, winning both the Rural Puirt-a-beul and the Lorn Shield competitions. In addition, the choir (along with friends from Lairg Gaelic Choir and Atòmaig Piseag) won the best mixed choir in the International Choral Competition at the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland this year.
At the Royal National Mòd our ladies compete in the Rural Ladies competition (The Grampian Television Trophy), and our men compete in the Mull and Iona Shield, as part of Coilich a’ Chinn a Tuath.
Amongst our medal winners are our conductor Raymond Bremner, who won the Gold Medal at the Royal National Mòd in 1999, and our Gaelic tutor Cairistìona Stone, who won the Traditional Gold Medal in 2012.
In the coming year, the choir is hoping to hold a number of small, local ceilidhs and may send a small contingent back to the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland. This is in addition to competing in the Caithness Music Festival, the usual Provincial Mòds, and of course Royal National Mòd. We also tend to have quite a few social events over the year.
